HOUSING AND URBAN PLANNING

BETTER AFFORDABLE HOUSING.

A great city is built through thoughtful planning, affordable housing, and well-managed urban growth. Every Nairobian deserves to live in a safe, dignified, and well-connected neighbourhood with access to essential services. Nairobi County must guide development responsibly, improve informal settlements, and create communities where families, businesses, and future generations can thrive.

Our Values

We believe that decent housing and well-planned communities are fundamental to a high quality of life. Every resident deserves access to safe, affordable housing, reliable infrastructure, green public spaces, and efficient transport networks. County government must promote orderly development, protect public spaces, and ensure that Nairobi grows in a way that is inclusive, sustainable, and responsive to the needs of its people.

The Problem

Nairobi's rapid population growth has outpaced urban planning. Many families live in informal settlements with inadequate housing, poor sanitation, limited access to clean water, and insufficient public infrastructure. Unplanned development has contributed to traffic congestion, overcrowding, shrinking public spaces, and pressure on essential services. Weak enforcement of planning regulations has also led to unsafe buildings, encroachment on public land, and neighbourhoods that lack the facilities needed to support growing communities.

Our Solution

As Governor, Babu Owino will promote smart urban development that delivers decent housing, well-planned neighbourhoods, and sustainable growth:

  • Affordable Housing Partnerships: Work with the national government, private developers, and financial institutions to increase access to affordable, quality housing across Nairobi.

  • Informal Settlement Upgrading: Improve roads, drainage, sanitation, street lighting, water supply, and public amenities in informal settlements while protecting residents' dignity and livelihoods.

  • Smart Urban Planning: Strengthen development planning to ensure orderly growth, protect public spaces, and provide adequate schools, health facilities, markets, and recreational areas.

  • Safer Buildings: Improve inspection and enforcement of building standards to protect residents and ensure safe, high-quality construction.

  • Transit-Oriented Development: Integrate housing with transport corridors, pedestrian walkways, cycling infrastructure, and public transport to reduce congestion and improve mobility.

  • Digital Planning Services: Modernise planning approvals and building permit systems to improve transparency, reduce delays, and encourage responsible development.

Key Takeaways
  • Affordable Housing: Expanding access to safe, decent, and affordable homes through strategic partnerships.

  • Better Planned Communities: Creating neighbourhoods with quality infrastructure, public amenities, and green spaces.

  • Upgraded Informal Settlements: Improving essential services while supporting inclusive urban development.

  • Smarter Growth: Promoting orderly planning, safer buildings, and efficient land use to build a more liveable Nairobi.
